Venture Capital Investment Competition

In 2011, while I was at Boston College, one of our 1998 full-time MBA grads was instrumental in getting BC involved in the Venture Capital Investment Competition, hosted by UNC. Our alumus contact has worked in venture capital since his graduation from BC, and has been both a judge and sponsor of the competition for over a decade. For the past three years BC separately fielded a team of 5 students, and in 2014 BC won the New England Regional Competition and placed 6th in the International Finals. BU won its regionals in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021, and did equally well in the Global Finals! This is now fully available at Boston University in year #8!

The format involves each school’s team acting as venture capitalists during an elevator pitch competition, competing with other graduate schools. The “VC’s” will choose the best entrepreneur presentations, and as part of the competition, will begin negotiating mock Term Sheets for investment. More information is available at www.vcic.org. Unsolicited Student / Participant Emails

“G51 and VCIC have been by far the best opportunities within my MBA program to advance me towards a career in VC. I can’t thank you enough for your understanding of that and for your support.”

“I’m writing to say what a pleasure it was to participate in VCIC today. The program was extremely well organized. It is clear that a lot of time went into its preparation. I was very impressed with the students’ knowledge of my business and the market as whole. At times, they asked me better questions than actual investors.”

“I have never had a professor that has cared for his students so much and taken an interest in our success.”

“I wanted to thank you again for hosting the BU VCIC event.  We had a fantastic time and it was all due to your hard work and enthusiasm throughout the event.”

Competition

Fall semester

We would like to accommodate at least 5 students for an internal VCIC competition to be held on campus. This contest will involve completing venture capital related reading, completing a take-home quiz and participating in the internal competition. Two prizes will be awarded:

  1. The judges will select the top team amongst the three which compete
  2. Across all competing teams, five individuals will be selected to represent Questrom at the Regional Competition in the timeframe of Jan – Mar next year.

Spring semester

The five students who are selected will be preparing for the regional competition, and as applicable, continuing to the Finals a few weeks later.

Application Deadline

(For 2022) Consisting of a resume and a survey (i.e. indicating why you believe you should be selected for the local competition on 11/4) will be due by 12 noon (EST) on Thursday, September 29, 2022 to this link.

This will be open to 2nd year full-time MBA’s, evening MBA’s, full-time / part-time grad business students in other programs.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we look forward to meeting you at the upcoming info sessions.
