Sunday as day of rest?– Maybe not anymore in France…

Greetings from France! With the BC administration’s blessing, I’m here teaching a course for a few days. Currently, the big debate on TV and in the newspapers is whether stores can open on Sunday’s. With the French economy looking to improve itself, the shopkeepers want the revenue, the employees additional wages (with a premium paid for Sunday work) and consumers more flexibility with their time on the weekend. The pushback is tradition, since Sunday’s are reserved for family, potential religious observance and a multi-hour afternoon lunch. Here are two links from The Economist and the Financial Times.
